LETTER TO THE EDITOR

Dear Editor,

This letter is in response to the January 13th, 2022, article ‘Top Stories of 2021 – Pentwater weighs marijuana issue”

The Village Council APPROVED Ordinance No. 115 Medical Marijuana and Marijuana Establishments Ordinance by a vote of 5 to 1 on July 12th, 2021. It was upheld on October 11th, 2021, 4 to 3.  That is only the first step of this process.  The next step in the process is to have the Zoning Amendment completed by the Planning Commission and then return to the Village Council for final approval.  This has been an ongoing process since 2019.

There has been a lot of debate and pushback from the Concerned Citizens of Pentwater, including the red signs “Pentwater not Potwater.”  According to the public statements made by Dan Hoekstra on behalf of the Concerned Citizens of Pentwater at Village Council and Planning Commission meetings, their goal is to stop the Village Council and Planning Commission from being able to move forward with the process by putting a referendum vote on the ballot for May 2022 and use the public vote to overturn the Council’s decision.  They have hired an attorney, Brion Doyle of Varnum Law Offices in Grand Rapids, and taken legal action against the Council and yet they accuse the Council of wasting the taxpayer’s money on attorney fees and the Planning Commission’s time on the marijuana discussion.  I wonder if they would have put this to a public vote if the Council had rescinded their decision in October?

Those of us that are in favor of having marijuana establishments are also upstanding members of the community. We are voters, taxpayers, business owners, employees, committee members, volunteers, church goers, Veterans, cancer survivors, patrons of the arts, mothers, fathers, grandparents, neighbors, friends, and family. We care about our community and Pentwater is our home too. We realize this is an uphill battle but worth fighting for because we see the benefits of cannabis use in our daily lives. Many members of the community use CBD in various forms, whether it be gummies, tinctures, salves, lotions and that is all made from cannabis. I look forward to the vote in May 2022 and will continue to advocate and educate for cannabis. If anyone needs to register to vote, they can do so by going online to: https://mvic.sos.state.mi.us/RegisterVoter

Respectfully,

Amanda Lewandowski
